Comment | This cemetery was originally located 150 ft north of Centerville Road (Route #117), east of Route #2, where the K-Mart was built in 1993. It was removed to All Saints Cemetery Sect E Lot 91 on 23 Nov. 1987. The remains of approximately 13 people were placed in a single grave. This graves was never marked. The gravestones were all put in the bottom of this grave. During this removal the stone wall was disposed of.
We are told that these were large beautiful slate gravestones with urn and willow motif. This removal is an example of how not to move a cemetery. The gravestones and a lovely stone wall were destroyed, even though the state laws in affect at the time were technically followed. That is the letter of the law was followed, but certainly not the spirit. In 1996, partly because of the loss of this cemetery, steps are underway to change this law.
James Arnold visited this lot 28 Aug. 1892 and commented, “on the farm east of the Harris Arnold farm in the rear of the farm buildings beside wall, showing neglect” (Vol. 4, p. 237).
Identified, registered and recorded by John Sterling for a book on Warwick cemeteries. |
