Comment | This cemetery is located 800 feet northeast of the intersection of Division and South County Trail (Route #2), called Barton’s Corner. In 1996 this is behind the Cinema theater. The cemetery is 50 ft x 100 ft, in good condition, enclosed by a stone wall with an iron gate. The historic cemetery sign is in good condition. It contains 48 burials with 39 inscribed stones and nine unmarked fieldstones. It is on the tax assessor’s map, Plat #215, Lot #13.
Several Revolutionary War soldiers were brought from Providence to be buried in fieldstone marked graves near Division Road, west of Route #2. In later years the wall from this cemetery was sold to Mr. Barton who used the stones to build the wall for the Barton Cemetery. This story, related by Violet Kettelle, explains why Arnold did not see the wall that is there now.
James Arnold visited this lot 2 May 1892 and commented, “northeast of Barton’s corner, in open lot poorly protected” (Vol. 3, p. 307). It was recorded again in the 1930s by Arthur James, “at Barton’s corner” (Vol. 29, p. 210)
Recorded by John Sterling for a book on Warwick cemeteries. |
