CommentThe Lovell General Hospital was established on Sunday, July 6, 1862 with the arrival of the Hospital Steam Ships 'America' and 'Atlantic' at Portsmouth Grove (now Melville) carrying 1,724 casualties from the ill-fated Peninsular Campaign in Virginia. The hospital was disestablished on August 28, 1865. During the war, the hospital received and treated 10,593 patients. Of these, 308 died. The Lovell General Hospital Cemetery contained the graves of 251 Union and Confederate soldiers of the Civil War and three citizens while 57 had been removed by relatives or friends. The list of the dead in this cemetery database contains 299 individuals. In May 1868, all the 251 dead were removed and reburied in the Cypress Hill National Cemetery in Farmingdale, Long Island, NY. Seebert J. Goldowsky, M.D., "The Hospital at Portsmouth Grove", The Rhode Island Medical Journal, November, 1959 pp 733-743. For further information and a painting of the hospital, see John T. Pierce Sr.,"Historical Tracts of Portsmouth, Rhode Island," Portsmouth, 1991, pp. 70-73. Data entered by Gene Baer.
