Comment | On the Cornell Homestead, a grant to Thomas Cornell Feb. 4, 1646. As of 1998 this burial ground was hidden far behind Bay View Estates, in extensive brambles. Lane behind pole #170 to end of road (1/4 mile) mentioned in earlier transcriptions has been reclaimed by undergrowth. By 2010 the Bay View Estates had expanded so that the cemetery is now behind unit #287 on Rolling Hill Road. (turn left off West Main Road onto Almeida Terrace, turn right onto Rolling Hill Road, bear left at the fork and proceed to unit #287.)
George H. Richardson (GHR) copied this lot in an undated visit, probably in the 1890s (Richardson Scrapbook 974 at NHS, p. 59).
Entitled "A Cornell Corner," a transcription of 11 stones by the Rev. John Cornell was published in "The NY Genealogical and Biographical Record," XXXI, No. 1, Jan. 1900, p. 180. He mentioned seeing also "stumps and remains of other tombstones" at that time.
A photo of the lot appears in his book "Genealogy of the Cornell Family," New York, 1902.
The stones were recorded by CETA circa 1975; they were copied and mapped by the Middletown Historical Society in Feb. 1987. Not mentioned by IK. |
