Comment | Located behind the second to last house (#74 Sisson Pond Road) on the north side of Sisson Pond Road. It is against the stone wall at the back of the property.
This lot used to be a considerable distance off Jepson Lane in an overgrown area of neglected farmland; in 1975 it had broken stones in a tangle of brush. With new development, however, it is now in the backyard of a new home (as of 1998) where it is being carefully maintained by interested homeowners. CETA and town hall info both use the number 40 for this cemetery. As of 1998, the state sign says 23.
The stones were recorded after 1896 by George H. Richardson (GHR Scrapbook at NHS, p. 64), by the anonymous author of "Rhode Island Tombstone Inscriptions" (ANON), circa 1900, at RIHS. Both GHR and ANON gave the location on Edward Sisson's farm. Patricia Bodine copied inscriptions for CETA 28 Oct. 1975. Although the burial ground is in good condition in 1998, pieces of two broken stones lie on a heap of stones near the cemetery, each bearing a carver's name: "P. Stevens & Son" and "P. Burden, Prov." |
