CommentThis Cemetery is located 20 feet east of East Main Road at pole #695. It is 1000 feet south of Union Street. Town Hall information says this cemetery was started by the Portsmouth Christian Union Church (the building is now the museum of the Portsmouth Historical Society) at the corner of East Main Road and Union Avenue. The tiny pamphlet "By-Laws of the Union Cemetery, Portsmouth, R.I." dates the actual incorporation of the cemetery to May 1897, though clearly many burials had previously taken place there. Many interesting Victorian stones and several elaborate cast metal markers. Recording of a few names by Henry E. Turner (HET) and some veterans from a list at town hall (VET). Transcription begun by Cherry Bamberg (CFB) Aug. 1998 divided the cemetery into Sections A (left of central road), and B (right of central road). Numbering in each section begins at the northwestern corner, i.e., closest to East Main Rd. In 1998 Cherry Bamberg started recording this cemetery. In 2007 Glenn Russell finished recording it. Letty Champion photographed each gravestone in 2008.
