burial of poor soldiers, sailors and marines of late Civil War.
Outside of the north, or backside of the cemetery there is a bronze plaque set in a boulder inscribed “In memory of George R. Tucker and Lydia Tucker Smith through whose generosity this grove was given to the Spears Cemetery Association August 1935”
It was noted that in 1992, when the cemetery was last listed that there were granite posts but no railing surrounding the cemetery. At the time of this listing, August 2012, iron pipe rails have been installed between the granite posts. Prior recording was made by Donald and Barbara Boyden, August 1992.
1 Nov 1930. Frank Stone was paid to go to Moosup Valley cemetery on 2 Aug 1930 and take bodies exhumed by a steam shovel in excavating for the state road (Moosup Valley) and take to the vault in Foster Center, then prepare a grave in Spears cemetery and bury. A marker was to be prepared for $15.
Local people told the road superintendent that a new routing of the road would go through an Indian Cemetery. Unheeding, the workers proceeded and dug up bones as predicted. Ruth Salisbury, who was a young woman at the time, said the superintendent had the skeletons arranged on the ground, then put into boxes. She remembered one tall man and a young girl. Her grandmother, Zilpha Battey, said this was an Indian cemetery. (MIM)
THE VAULT: According to records of the Old Home Day Association, it was voted in May 1912 to build a receiving tomb at Spears Cemetery. In October 1915, the expense of the tomb was reported as $597.65. On June 2, 1967, the Association voted to convey the tomb to Spears Cemetery together with the land that Spears had deeded to the Old Home Day Association on May 13, 1913. (Note: the tomb is located on the western edge of the cemetery property, set back from the road and accessed by a separate lane on the north side of North Road.
Mary Thoman whose husband, Doug Thoman, is the caretaker of the cemetery informed us that there were no records maintained prior to 1922 and there were burials that are not marked or recorded. The site must be probed prior to digging any grave to be sure that there is not a burial in the selected location. Doug Thoman stated that in the past graves had been unearthed when digging new graves. |
