Notes[Beaman notes following information from inscription: "The Continental Congress appointed him one of the Navy Board established in Boston in 1777 of which body he was the presiding member until its dissolution. In 1747 he was involved with a charter for the Redwood Library. 1791 President Redwood Library. In 1741 an incorporator of the Newport Artillery Company. A long list of other accomplishments." [Major slave trader, merchant and patriot. Placed his house at the disposal of Rochambeau when the French troops were quartered at Newport in the Rev War.][SAR: burial list]
