CommentRichard Greene Family Cemetery: basically one paragraph in Anna Lawrence's book on Potowomut says that “King Richard” Greene (Rocky Hill School now) buried four of his children in the old Greene cemetery in an area down by the Narrows, meaning the narrowest part of the Potowomut (Greenes) River, the south end of Gammell's “The Meadows” property. This might take a bit of tact or perhaps the deft touch of a diplomat. The Gammells are the only descendants of the Browns who still maintain a residence on the Neck. The land's lineage went from the Greene's to the Brown-Ives (ca. 1820) and then the Gammells a generation later. I don't think I'd want to traipse all over their land without them knowing in advance. There were three generations of Greenes descending from Surgeon John Greene of Warwick living at at the north end of the Neck. King Richard Greene was a Loyalist (as opposed to his cousin, Nathanael, the general) and his land was confiscated at the end of the Revolution. One of the prominent Brown brothers of Providence, Nicholas, bought it for his daughter Hope when she married Thomas P. Ives. The property in the area of the cemetery in question in still in the family 200 years later. Brown University Professor Wm. Gammell married an Ives daughter. “Richard Greene had married and established his family at Potowomut several years before his father's death. He carried on the estate with a lavish hand and generous hospitality. On account of this he was called by many "King Richard". Of his family of fourteen children, four died in childhood and were buried in the family burial ground on the southern part of his land near "The Narrows" of the river. Tutors were employed to educate his family until they were old enough to attend boarding schools.” --- Anna Lawrence
