When the owner of the home at #183 Charlotte Dr. was doing some renovations in his basement , he found the top half of the skeleton of an African American woman who died between 1860 and 1900, according to the state forensic anthropologist. The building inspector was misinformed and told the man that he must stop construction and fill in the basement with concrete to not disturb anything else, which he did. Consequently there was no further studies done by any archaeological firm and there is no conclusive evidence that she was the only occupant of that area. For that reason we wanted it documented that there was something found there. There was no more studies done, and therefore nothing else could be confirmed as to body or bodies buried there, the city was hesitant to call it a cemetery. However, there was one person buried there and according to the state definition of a cemetery it qualifies, we consider it a cemetery and wanted it designated as such.
