Comment | This cemetery is located at the northwest corner of West Shore Road and Church Avenue, at telephone pole #2. It is bounded by Lovell Avenue on the west, Church Street on the south and West Shore Road on the east side. The cemetery is 100 ft x 55 ft, in fair condition, with no enclosure. The historic cemetery sign is in fair condition. It contains 31 burials with 10 inscribed stones and 20 fieldstones. Only one of the 20 fieldstone marked graves noted by Arnold could be seen in 1994. It is on the tax assessor’s map, Plat #332, Lot #1.
The old Baptist Meeting House stood at the right center of this burial ground. This was the oldest church in town, having existed as a branch of the First Baptist Church of Providence since the time of the first settlement. It assumed its independent existence about 1725. By 1730 it had 65 members. The church, which was forty feet square, was taken down in the spring of 1830. There is a picture of the church in Fuller’s History of Warwick p.309.
This lot was visited by James Arnold in 1894 Vol. 29, pp. 138-140 and by Benns in 1934, their #356.
Recorded by John Sterling for a book on Warwick cemeteries. |
