CommentThis cemetery no longer exists in its original location. The GPS coordinates above are the present location in Brayton Cemetery (WK034). It was removed from behind #2215 Elmwood Avenue to Brayton Cemetery (WK034) to make way for elderly housing in the 1950s. The gravestones were laid flat on the ground and a granite monument was erected that reads “Here lie the remains of the Hammond Prophet family, removed from the cemetery in Norwood.” The original cemetery was 75 ft x 50 ft with 23 graves. It was on the tax assessor’s map, Plat #244, Lot #182. James Arnold visited this lot 19 Sept. 1890, and noted, “On the east side of Sand Pond a burial yard of colored people, neglected. Another a few rods from Apponaug-Greenwich Road” (Vol. 4, p. 69). He found 6 slate and 11 marble gravestones. The map numbers are from his transcript, recorded in the cemetery’s original location. It was recorded again in 1938 by Charles and Martha Benns, their #928. The Lippitts and Daileys are descendants of the Pequot Indian tribe. Recorded by John Sterling for a 1997 book on Warwick cemeteries.
