CommentMost cemeteries that contain the graves of young children only are rather poorly documented. In the case of this lot we have Daniel Stedman’s testimony about where the two children who died in the 1830s were buried and the movement of those graves in 1853, as well as Arnold’s transcription and location in 1880. We were able to read the stones in their present location in Riverside Cemetery, (SK 43), section A, where the children are buried near their parents who died in 1898 and 1899. When James N. Arnold visited this lot in its then location Jan. 19, 1881, it contained three children of Samuel and Sarah A. Stedman. He recorded this lot his #270, “on land of Samuel Steadman north of his house in corner of lot three graves those of his children.” Note: James N. Arnold always spelled Stedman, Steadman regardless of how it shows on the gravestone. Identified, registered, and recorded by John Sterling & James Wheaton for a 2004 book on South Kingstown cemeteries.
