Comment | This cemetery is located 180 feet south of Route #138 at telephone pole #70 adjacent to the George Hazard Lot, SK003, on the north side. It is fifty feet by forty feet, in fair condition, with no enclosure and no historical cemetery sign. It contains at least ten burials all marked with fieldstones, seven of which are crudely inscribed.
James N. Arnold recorded this lot Nov. 12, 1880, his #235. He noted: “Beside this yard [SK 3] we find the following on rude stones. Were the early Cottrells.” These crudely inscribed fieldstones are very difficult to read and—from the state of his transcription—have been so at least since 1880 when Arnold had a great deal of trouble. We employed the techniques described in the introduction of exposing all lettering, carefully washing the stones, and lighting them with a mirror. What we believe we saw is documented in the sketches on the following page. Readers should be aware of the F (fair) and P (poor) legibility ratings of these stones. We also checked for these initials in the vital records and the probate records of the town to try to determine the names, but unfortunately none of these initials and dates could be found in the records.
Found, registered, and recorded by John Sterling & James Wheaton for a 2004 book on South Kingstown cemeteries. |
