Comment | This cemetery is located seven hundred feet north of Post Road. It is about eighty feet behind the house at #3227 Post Road (Route #1A), very close to where it comes into Route #1. It is forty feet square, in fair condition, with no enclosure except for a wall on the west side, and there is no historical cemetery sign. When James N. Arnold visited this cemetery Oct. 12, 1880, he counted thirty to forty fieldstones, but only two could be seen in 2003 along with a marble military stone.
James N. Arnold numbered this burial ground #165, noting “on land late belonging to Samuel S. Tucker near road beside wall a burial yard of whom not known lot in bad order should judge there have between 30 and 40 graves. Overgrown much with weeds and briars. Probably colored.”
Found, registered, and recorded by John Sterling & James Wheaton for a 2004 book on South Kingstown cemeteries. |
