CommentThis cemetery is located five hundred feet south of Peace Pipe Trail, near Indian Lake, at telephone pole # 3844½. Follow the trail at the end of Peace Pipe Trail (percolation pipes were there in 2001 indicating houses will be built soon). It is sixty by forty feet, in good condition, with no enclosure, and the historical cemetery sign is missing. It contains 22 burials with two inscribed slate stones and 18 fieldstones. James N. Arnold visited this lot July 31, 1880, his #108, “on land belonging to the heirs of the late Thomas C. Watson west of Post Road and west of Maple Swamp in open lot unprotected is a burial yard of the Brown family. Lot fast becoming briery and showing marks of neglect.” “Note, these were the parents of Gov. George Brown [Lieutenant Governor 1799-1800] who was buried first on lower hill but afterwards removed to Westerly. R. B. [Rowland Brown] was an inn keeper here and a man well known in his day.” Daniel Stedman noted in his journal 16 January 1836 “Died Govener George Brown aged 90 years at Pawcawtuck [Connecticut] and Brought him down and Buried him at the Church on Tower Hill.” This was probably SK 26. He is now buried at Riverbend Cemetery in Westerly (WY008). Registered in 1976 by Edwin Connelly Recorded by John Sterling and James Wheaton for a 2004 book on South Kingstown cemeteries.
