Comment | This cemetery can be found on the Commodore Perry estate, now (2002) the Tickner estate, at #1591 Commodore Perry Highway (Route #1). The current driveway used to be White Pond Road. It is 350 feet northwest of the Commodore Perry House west of Route #1. It is 25 feet x 30 feet, in fair condition, enclosed with granite posts. The historical cemetery sign is in good condition. It contains twelve burials with two inscribed stones and eleven fieldstones. Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry, who was born on this property, is buried in a plot in the Island Cemetery in Newport (NT003) provided by the state of Rhode Island in recognition of his service to the county.
James N. Arnold visited this lot Oct. 11, 1880, his #156, “On the Commodore Perry place north of his house on a knoll, granite posts but no rods as yet lot rather neglected a burial yard of the Perry family”
Recorded by John Sterling and James Wheaton for a 2004 book on South Kingstown cemeteries. |
