Comment | This cemetery is located 700 feet west of Succotash Road at telephone pole #93. It is in back of the house known as the “Great House,” on a hill overlooking the upper end of Potter Pond, west of Succotash Road and south of Post Road. It is beside the drive way, near the house at 115A Succotash Road. It is 90 feet x 45 feet, in fair condition, with no enclosure, and the historical cemetery sign is missing. It contains 49 burials with five inscribed stones and 44 fieldstones. Arnold counted 45 fieldstones on his visit in 1880, but only seventeen could be seen in 2001.
James N. Arnold visited this lot Oct. 16, 1880, his #188, “on land of Thomas J Champlin east of Fish Cove on hill southeast from the old John Potter house a burial yard beside wall unprotected.” “Beside the above we counted in this yard 27 large and 14 small graves with rude stones only.”
Recorded by John Sterling and James Wheaton for a 2004 book on South Kingstown cemeteries. |
