Comment | This cemetery is located 200 feet north of Main Street, and 380 feet northeast of Old Post Road, behind #681 Main Street. This is at Sugar Loaf Hill, just within grounds of Atmore Wright House, Wakefield. It is thirty feet square, in good condition, with no enclosure, and the historical cemetery sign is in good condition. It contains six burials with six inscribed stones. It also contains the graves of several pets. A recent owner had all of the stones laid flat because he was spooked having a cemetery in his yard. Matthew Chappell was a close friend of Daniel Stedman. He and his family make frequent appearances in the latter’s journal.
James N. Arnold recorded this lot Dec. 10, 1880, his #264, “in lot north of Sugar Loaf Hill.”
Recorded by John Sterling and James Wheaton for a 2004 book on South Kingstown cemeteries. |
