Comment | This cemetery is located fifteen feet east of South Road at telephone pole # 3056, a thousand feet north of Woodbine Drive. It is 65 feet x 30 feet and contains 27 burials with eight inscribed stones and nineteen fieldstones; there is no wall or fence, but the historical cemetery sign is in good condition. This cemetery is in poor condition, overgrown with briars, and the stones have been broken.
It was recorded by James N. Arnold Oct. 5, 1880, his #116, “On land of Dr. Hazard north side of road leading toward Worden Pond from a point south of Sugar Loaf Hill.” Arnold then noted for his #117 “over the fence north.” He read the stones there for Betsey P. Sweet, George W Crumb, and noted six unmarked fieldstones. Arnold recorded this cemetery as two separate cemeteries divided by a fence. These are now included in the cemetery registered as SK 52.
Since several stones have been broken and stacked out of their original locations, the order found in the Arnold transcript from 1880 has been used to place the stones in their original order. Other graves noted by Arnold are also detailed between the marked stones.
Recorded by John Sterling and James Wheaton for a 2004 book on South Kingstown cemeteries. |
