This cemetery is located fifty feet east of Main Street in Wakefield at telephone pole #1136, next to the Wakefield Baptist Church, behind the parking lot. It is now seventy feet by fifty feet, in good condition, with no enclosure. The historical cemetery sign is missing. James N. Arnold visited this lot Mar. 4th and 5th in 1880, his #57, in the Baptist Church yard at Wakefield we find...” At the end of his two day transcript he wrote “the above includes all readable inscriptions in this yard at the time of our visitation… . Lot in poor condition and no doubt will be finally removed to other cemeteries.” We know by comparing the James N. Arnold transcript with what we find today that this cemetery was much larger. Many of the gravestones were moved to Riverside Cemetery SK 43 and Oakdell Cemetery SK 37. We are told that the church moved some gravestones back and families removed others to other cemeteries when the parking lot was built on what was the front part of this cemetery. Undoubtedly there are bodies buried under the present parking lot. Recorded by John Sterling and James Wheaton for a 2004 book on South Kingstown cemeteries.
