Comment | This cemetery is located 70 feet west of Rockwood Lane at telephone pole # 8938. This is 3/10 mile south of Curtis Corners Road on Rockwood Lane north of SK038 on the other side (west) of the road. It is 30 feet by 30 feet, in poor condition, enclosed with a stone wall with the gate missing, and the historical cemetery sign is in fair condition. There are 12 marked burials with 11 inscribed marble stones and one fieldstone. A 1995 survey and a check in 2002 found stones #1, 2, 3, and 5 are out of location and leaning against the cemetery wall. Stone #10 is missing. The footstones are in place and were used, along with the Arnold transcript, to construct the map of stone locations. The cemetery was found full of brush, poison ivy, briars, and has animal holes in the ground.
James Arnold visited this lot 5 Oct 1880, his #123, “a few rods northwest of the above [SK520 – another Gavitt family cemetery that has not been found in the 1990s] another yard of the Gavitt family, lot walled in good order inside.”
Recorded by John Sterling and James Wheaton for a 2004 book on South Kingstown cemeteries. |
