CommentSince this cemetery is quite hard to find, we will give more extensive directions than usual. This cemetery is located 850 feet southeast of Plains Road at telephone pole # 6039 (this pole is at GPS coordinate 41º 30.043' x 71º 31.941'). A good Rhode Island direction to this cemetery is northeast of where the Kingston dump used to be. It is 635 feet west of the Thomas B. Sherman house and well (the house foundation is at GPS coordinate 41º 29.940' x 71º 31.671'). Follow the cart path opposite pole #6039 east for 750 feet. Go south about two hundred feet past an old gravel pit to a stone wall running east-west. The cemetery is on the south side of this wall and north of the another gravel pit. The cemetery can be found at GPS coordinates 41º 29.987' x 71º 31.772' (datum GRS84). It is forty feet square, in fair condition with no enclosure. There is a historical cemetery sign in poor condition. There are six burials, five of which are marked. James N. Arnold recorded this cemetery on Feb. 20, 1880, the first one he recorded in South Kingstown. He called it the “Judge Peleg Brown Cemetery,” and he found it “on land now belonging to Thomas B. Sherman west of his house at base of hill on south side of wall, yard otherwise unprotected we find these graves with white slabs with inscriptions following.” Recorded by John Sterling and James Wheaton for a 2004 book on South Kingstown cemeteries.
