t is the burial place of Prosper Gorton. deed of sale Elisha Williams to Prosper Gorton dated 1797 deed of sale Prosper Gorton to Ezekiel Ralph dated 1831. "Government Pension Records reveal that a probate action took place in Scituate, RI, in February 1835. Prosper’s heirs requested the Court’s approval to recover unpaid pension benefits that were due to Prosper for the period from September 1832 to March 1833. The probate record confirmed the following: • Prosper’s death date as 13 March 1833 • Lists Prosper’s heirs as, Flora Proffit (wife of John Proffit), Jeremiah Prosper and Mason Prosper. • Prosper left no widow (assumption is Hagar died earlier as noted) Prosper Gorton was a Revolutionary War veteran, who had served over 5 years in the 1st RI Regiment (Black Regiment) and after the war had purchased 19 acres of land here in the central portion of the village. He married, allegedly had children, received a pension, died and was buried here in 1833. Pension #S38741
