| Comment | Established in 1848 by Amos D Smith, James Y Smith, William V Daboll and other Elmwood real estate speculators. The cemetery was extensively planted with shrubs and was surrounded by a hedge. Without the church affiliation Locust Grove never acquired the status of its neighbor, Grace Church Cemetery. By the end of the 19th century sales of plots declined and, without funds, the maintenance deteriorated.
Maintained by City of Providence since 1978. Records at North Burial Ground office. The burial records have been entered into the database from the original six small notebooks, not the copy books taken from same in 1978. These notebooks are tattered and some names have crumbled away. The burial records give the burial date and the residence at time of death. When this residence is other than Providence it has been entered as the death place. Sometimes this is a hospital or nursing home. There are many gravestones in this cemetery that do not show in the records, so until this cemetery is recorded on the ground this database will not be complete.
