This cemetery is 170 feet west of Homestead Ave. opposite Alice Ave, near the center of the island, half a mile from the eastern shore. DAR members transcribed this lot, then in very poor condition, in 1941. They found 44 stones either obliterated or broken. John C. Thresher recorded this data ca. 1992. Charles C. Maytum in his "Paragraphs on Early Prudence Island," 1964, refers to this as "The Old Cemetery" sited on land first leased to the Allin family in the 1660s. He tells a romantic story of two stones (those of Caleb Allin and Caleb Hill) being split by a cannonball from the British ship 'Juno' in Sept. 1777. He records the Dennis monument with two more names than were legible when it was transcribed in 1992. These are entered with a transcriber code CCM.
