CommentThis triangular cemetery is 30' north of the west end of the Portsmouth Middle School parking lot. It is 300 feet west of Jepson Lane. According to town hall and CETA information, this lot should have the sign 23. The signs for this and the nearby 40 seem to have been switched at some time after the lot was recorded in 1989 by Ian Kohl (IK). Until the mixup is corrected, the graves will appear in the database under the currently posted number. George H. Richardson (GHR) recorded this cemetery in 1894, saw several "rude stones" as well (Richardson Scrapbook at NHS). "Rhode Island Tombstone Inscriptions" (ANON), circa 1900, at RIHS gives 8 inscriptions, gives location as Stephen Perry Weaver farm, Gipson (sic) Lane. Patricia Bodine recorded the lot for CETA 2 Oct. 1975; Middletown Historical Society read it again 25 Apr. 1987. Deteriorated stone walls border three sides, the other side was open to a field. The stones were all marble, slightly pointed, hard to read. Only two still were standing in 1987 due to vandalism.
