Comment | Located east of Turnpike Ave. and south of Dexter Street.
Large, active cemetery. Although the 1970 resurvey said this cemetery belonged to the town, information from Herbert F. Hall III at Portsmouth Town Hall states that this cemetery is neither owned nor operated by the Town of Portsmouth, either now or in the past. "The Town owns ONE LOT in
this cemetery for the burial of the destitute." Originally started by the
Methodist Church, this may be the "Methodist Ground" to which the graves
from PO507 were moved, according to George H. RichardsonAs of Sept. 1989, Herbert F. Hall III was the secretary-treasurer and gravedigger (phone: 401/847-7892).
The only sources are (1) 11 names recorded by George H. Richardson (GHR), Richardson Scrapbook 974 at NHS, probably in the 1890s, (2) "Rhode Island Tombstone Inscriptions," (ANON), circa 1900, at RIHS, 19 names, and (3) 22 veterans listed at Portsmouth Town Hall (VET), only data the war in which they served. ANON gave the location as the old Burrington Anthony farm now owned by Henry C. Anthony & others, east of the Bristol Ferry Road, Portsmouth." GHR called the location the Townsend farm on Cory's
Lane. These descriptions suggest that it may have begun as a small family cemetery. |
