| Comment | On traffic island on Rte 1, north of bridge over railroad across from Riverhead Building Supply and a shopping mall. This burial ground was recorded three times prior to 1940. Two attempts were made to find it, but only what appears to be a few fieldstone graves.
Arnold visited this lot August 1, 1883, his #173, "Close to the house of Fones Austin is a burial yard of the Hunt family all marked with rude stones except one."
Burgess: "Letson. West side of Post Rd, just N. of Hunt's River Bridge."
Mary Huling, 1934: "South of East Greenwich pumping station, between the old and new road, on a high bank, just as you are toward the railroad bridge. Quite a number of graves with rude, unmarked stones and one blue slate stone⦠It is thought to be the Hunt burial ground." |
