Comment | Located 425 feet north of Gilbert Stuart Rd, on west side of Pettaquamscutt River, behind the Gilbert Stuart Birthplace. Path well marked by signs "Indian Burial Ground." (note: it is not an Indian cemetery) Site roughly enclosed by timber fence, clear of brush, but trees intrude.
On 15 March 1880, his #20, Arnold viewed this lot and described it thus: "In bend of river just north of Hammond's Mill, west side lot overgrown with oak [?] is a cemetery of the Burlingame family. Lot unprotected graves marked with rudestones only. We counted 7 large and 3 small graves and think the plow hasdestroyed others. These are among the earliest settlers of Kingstown."Burgess in the 1930's : "Only fieldstones, but Mr. Vose told me it was a Burlingame Lot."
In January 1990, 10 fieldstone graves found.
Recorded by Althea McAleer, Beatrix Hoffius, and Deby Nunes for a 1992 book on North Kingstown cemeteries. |
