CommentThis cemetery was established on the northeast shore of Dutch Island in 1863 as a burial ground for members of the 14th Reg't RI Heavy Artillary. They were stationed at Dutch Island in the fall of 1863 where they defended the West Passage in Narragansett Bay with eight artillery pieces. Many died if small pox and one died of gangrene after hitting his thumb with a hammer setting up his tent. A seven foot obelisk of granite was dedicated to their honor in 1873. The remains of the men buried here were removed to the Long Island National Cemetery in Farmingdale, NY in July of 1948. Fort Greble was named in honor of 1st Lt. John Trout Greble, 2nd Artillery, USA, who was the first officer of the Regular Army killed in the Civil War. In 1863, the land was sold to the United States government, and the island was taken over by the Army by 1864. This burial ground no longer exists.
