CommentThis cemetery is located 25 feet south of Harkney Hill Road, directly across from the Maple Root Baptist Church. It contains about 1100 burials with 781 inscribed stones. It is surrounded by granite posts with iron rails. Plainland Cemetery, CY050, lies just east of Maple Root Cemetery. This is a very old cemetery containing many crudely inscribed fieldstones for the earliest settlers in this area. This is probably the most interesting cemetery in Coventry. Apparently it started in what we are calling section I for the Greene family, overlooking Maple Root Pond. These Greenes are descendants of John Greene of Quidnessett, through his son John (1688-1756) who is the first marked burial in this cemetery. Section H, to the north of section I, started as a Nichols family lot and then Weaver, Johnson, Andrews and Fish burials were added later. Records at Town Hall indicate that this cemetery later became a proprietor cemetery. The first lot in this newer section was sold to Philip Johnson on 7 Nov 1893. James Arnold visited between October 9 and 13, 1905, Vol. 6, Book H and I, page 773, “At Maple Root Church is a cemetery, the lots are much neglected, the yard is enclosed by granite posts and iron rails and wall on back side, all in good order.” Registered and recorded by Dr. Bill Eddleman and John Sterling for a 1998 book on Coventry cemeteries.
