The inscription says that Capt. Brown "departed this life (at Pawtucket on his way home from Boston where he had just arrived from sea)." The verse expands this theme: "In health I left my native home,/Not thinking this to be my Doom;/I passed the dangers of the Sea./In hopes to meet my Family./But Death has called, I must obey,/Before I all of them shall see."
