Notes
"At the commencemment of the War of 1861 he promptly surrendered congenial pursuits and flattering prospects and enlisted in the service of his country, he fought bravely at the taking of Fort Henry and Fort Donelson and at the battle of Pittsburg Landing. Served as clerk on the staff of Gen. Grant, was detailed for duty in the Corps of Topographical Engineers and accompanied Gen. Sherman in the Grand March from Atlanta to Savannah and thense to Goldsboro, NC. In every position he discharges his duty fearlessly and faithfully, winning the approbation of his superiors in rank and the esteem of all who knew him. Experience taught him the need of faith and he trusted in the Great Deliverer."
