Notes[Admiral Charles d'Arsac de Ternay arrived in Newport July 11, 1780 in command of 44 ships bearing more than 5000 French troops sent to help defend the American troops. Count de Rochambeau was Commander of the army. Before leaving France Admiral de Ternay suffered an attach of the gout and while on his way to Hartford, CT with Rochambeau to meet George Washington he became seriously ill. In October he was confined to bed on his flagship "Duc de Burgogne" and finally was taken to the headquarters of the French naval command in the Hunter-Wanton house on Washington St. at the foot of Elm St. He died there December 15, 1780. Shortly after the war ended in 1785 the King of France placed a memorial in the shape of a small stone building over Admiral de Ternay's grave and over it was placed a slab of black Egyptian marble with a Latin inscription. "In the name of God Charles Louis d'Arsac De Ternay Knight of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem Through the Vows of the Order he had never acknowledged descended from an ancient and noble family of Bretagne One of th Admirals of the King's Fleets a Citizen, a Soldier, a Chief, serviceablyfaithful to his King and country, for 42 years, now rests beneath this marble." By 1794 the inscription slab had become so broken that it was removed and placed against the outside wall of the church. In 1872 a granite marker was placed on the grave.]
