Notes/Misc Details
Notes[General Ass'y Records: murdered by a negro slave belonging to Mr. Mumford of Kingston. The body of the slave was found on the shore of Little Compton in the Province of the Massachusetts Bay. It was thought that he threw himself into the sea rather than be taken alive. It was ordered that his head, legs and arms be cut off from his body and hung in some public place near the town, and his body be burnt to ashes "that it may, please God, be something of a terror to others from perpetrating of the like barbarity for the future."] Stone carved by John Hartshorn of Norwich, Ct and lettered by Joshua Hempstead of New London, Ct.
