Notes | "was born in Providence 1753; graduated at RI College 1773, studied
medicine in Providence and Philadelphia, commenced practice in his native
place, served as surgeon in the Army of the Revolution, visited the
hospitals and medical schools of europe. !785 was present at the 1st
settlement of Marietta [Ohio] 1788 moved to Pennsylvania, 1792 returned
to New Englandin 1801 and settled in this place, was appointed Professor
of Botanyand Materia Medica in Brown University and continued the
practice of medicine till his death which occurred February 5th, 1834 in
his 81st year. Dr. Drown was a member of the American Academy of Arts
and Sciences, an honorary member of several other learned bodies; a good
scholar, a man of very extensive reading and information,a great admirer
of the works of nature, a skillful and emminent physician, a
distinguished, a sincere patriot and an honest man."
