Comment | This cemetery was removed to Brayton Cemetery (WK034) in Apponaug from Old Warwick in 1910. It contained 11 burials with nine inscribed stones. A manuscript at the Rhode Island Historical Society, “Family Record of Capt. (and Judge) Anthony Low of Old Warwick, begun by him in 1754”, documents this family. It gives the following information about this burial ground: “He [Anthony Low] was buried, with his two wives and most of their children, in the Low Family Burying Ground on the farm in Old Warwick. In 1910 this ground was sold, and the family were removed to two lots in the Brayton Cemetery in Apponaug, R.I. under the care of two of his great, great grandchildren, viz. Miss Mary Anne Green and Col. H. Irving King.”
James Arnold visited this lot 15 July 1894 and noted, “on the farm a little west of the Thomas Greene burial ground, lot walled but yard inside much neglected” (Vol. 29, p. 145). Charles and Martha Benns recorded this cemetery at Brayton in 1932, their #168.
Note that the adult slate gravestones are all 24" by 14". They all have the same look, yet they mark burials covering a 100 year period from 1732 to 1832. Two are signed “J. Tillinghast”, but they do not appear to be as skillfully carved as other Tillinghast stones. This mystery requires further investigation.
Identified, registered and recorded by John Sterling for a book on Warwick cemeteries. |
